Election Night

Sprite’s Keepers spin this Friday is all about voting and the election click here and check it out.

On the night of the election I was nervous, this was going to be a historic event no matter which way the people voted.  We were either going to have our first African American President or we were going to have the first Woman Vice President.

I put on my t-shirt and fuzzy slippers, made a cup of tea and set up a live chat to discuss the nights events as they unfolded.  My friends and I talked about our boobs , kids, and girly stuff the different states as the media made their predictions.  Thanks to Sprite’s Keeper, Im sleep Deprived, If I Could Escape, and The Edge of Insanity for making my first live chat fun.

I got the idea from Pink and Green Mama to print out a map for Meggers.  She was super excited about being able to follow along and color in the states as they turned red and blue.  However, in the beginning it was going a bit slow, so she started to make her own predictions and then the excitement was just to much for her.

My hubby came into the bedroom when the electorate votes were about 197 to 76 and asked me

“can I watch Entourage?”

WHAT?  Do you not realize this is the night I’ve been waiting for I have my t-shirt on, I’m chatting, I have my cup of tea  Meggers is bored to tears working with her map.

“It’s only a half hour, this things gonna go on all night, what can you possibly miss in a half hour?”

I reluctantly agreed and guess what I missed?  I flipped to CNN as soon as his show was over and Barack Obama had been declared our President Elect.  My hubby stiffled his laugh knowing that I was irritated.  I watched McCain give his concession speech, which I thought was eloquent and gracious.

I think I was stunned, I wanted it to happen and I campaigned hard to help make it happen, but I had to admit I’d had a few moments of doubt.  When Barack walked out I wondered how African Americans must’ve been feeling.  Then he opened his mouth to speak and it was powerful, there were so many great moments in his speech but the one that touched me…..

barack

” This is our moment. This is our time –- to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth –- that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:  Yes, we can.”

I couldn’t help but think about Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

martin

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed:  “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

It was a great night for American History, that I feel spoke to the dreams of little girls and children of different race, that anything is attainable if you have a dream and you work hard for it.

  5. Great post, Kirst! Do you know that the first lawsuit has already come out over Obama’s speech? Yes, Bob the Builder has sued him for the use of the “Yes, we can!” bit. What is this world coming to?

Yes, I am! Kidding, that is! LOL

P.S. Loved the 3D boob shot, too.
